Director of Volunteers
The Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary has a long history with retail shops. In 1942, a member of the Women’s Auxiliary recommended that the board operate a “gift and hospitality shop” for the convenience of patients, visitor and staff. The primary purpose would be for service rather than profit. 76 years later, it’s still in business! The shop has certainly changed from its inception, but the heart and passion of our Auxiliary volunteers has remained the same.
One of Greenwich Hospital’s many strengths is the relationship between the organization and its Auxiliary volunteers. As you walk into the shop, you may need sunglasses as you pass the sparkling jewelry case that is the focal point of the boutique. What really shines is the loyal and dedicated volunteers. The longevity of our volunteers is an inspiration to all. Nine of our volunteers have met or exceeded the 20 year mark. Our longest volunteer has been with us for 42 years. The 1,000 square foot shop, which is open 7 days a week, features attractive and inviting window displays tempting shoppers of all ages. Merchandise includes jewelry, woman’s accessories, apparel, baby items, toys, cards, holiday and home décor, flowers, gifts and much more. Our staff and volunteers are wonderful customers receiving a 10% discount on purchases with hospital id’s. While our employees often frequent the shop, visitors to the hospital and residents from the community often refer to our Gift Shop as a “destination boutique”.
Room Service Anyone? Patients unable to get down to our shop can call shop staff or volunteers and purchase items over the phone. Volunteers will also go to the bedside and bring sample items for patients to see and purchase. In partnership with our integrative medicine services, patients can also call and purchase a massage for themselves or as gifts for patients admitted in to our care. Greenwich Hospital is continually striving to enhance the patient experience and through our volunteers’ generous gift of time and compassion, they have helped our hospital to become a leader in patient satisfaction.
The AHVRP Retail Excellence Program Award is an award category available to AHVRP members. This award will recognize retail excellence in healthcare systems, hospitals, long term care or hospice organizations. This award recognizes a retail shop in a healthcare setting which has resulted in achieving exemplary results, and has demonstrated substantial benefit to the recipients, to the health care organization, the community and to the volunteers providing the service.
To qualify for the Retail Excellence Award, the retail shop will have been in operation for at least three years.
This award is open to all AHVRP members and the health care organizations they represent. If selected, AHVRP will honor the Retail Excellence Award recipient at the 50th Annual AHVRP Conference & Exposition Recognition Breakfast, Sunday, September 30, 2018, Hyatt Regency O'Hare, Rosemont, Illinois. Recipient will receive one 2018 AHVRP conference registration (non-transferable), an award and notification to senior leadership of the recipient's organization.
All entries must be submitted by Wednesday, April 25, 2018, 11:59 p.m. CST. All submissions will be notified by May 31, 2018, whether or not the submission was selected.
