COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM
The Caring Tree
Provena St. Mary's Hospital, Kankakee, IL
Appropriately named "The Caring Tree," the project is dedicated to helping meet the needs of the less fortunate all through the year instead of only during the Christmas season. The project is a natural extension of Provena St. Mary's mission to build communities of healing and hope by responding to human needs.
The project began by placing a small Christmas tree in the hospital lobby with a theme each month of items to be donated. As donations continued to come in, the project was expanded to include items for the entire family. The project was then moved to Provena St. Mary's 2nds To Go resale store to handle the increase volume of articles. Vouchers were given to the needy which could be redeemed to purchase beds, mattresses, blankets, etc. The Auxiliary collaborated with 16 different agencies throughout the community and has helped over 550 people, thus qualifying it for the 2004 HAVE Community Service Program Award.
IN-SERVICE HOSPITAL VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
BedNet
Christiana Care Health System, Newark, DE
The BedNet program was designed to ensure that long-term, bed bound, patients had Internet access to help relieve loneliness, boredom, anxiety, depression and prolonged postpartum recovery. BedNet was set up with donated computers. The volunteers that instruct the patients are all mothers who have gone through a similar experience. BedNet has helped over 220 women and has been immensely helpful - the number of psychiatric consults for depression (linked to premature birth) has plummeted. The program has been so well received that additional donations have been obtained and the program is now being implemented for cancer patients. The BedNet program is an excellent example of utilizing non-traditional sources of volunteer manpower on behalf of hospitals.
FUND-RAISING PROGRAM
Partners in Giving (P.I.G.)
FHN Memorial Hospital (formerly Freeport Memorial Hospital) Freeport, IL
To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Freeport Memorial Hospital, the Partners in Giving Team made an unprecedented pledge to raise $100,000 and to push for 100 percent participation from 1,500 employees. Employees were invited to submit a wish list of much needed equipment to advance the quality of patient care, improve the atmosphere for care or have a health-related community-wide impact.
The acronym PIG was used as the theme and the campaign was kicked off with a "PIGnic" Pig Roast. Team members sold ceramic pigs in a silent auction. Employees were allowed to donate by signing pledge cards and donors meeting a designated giving level were eligible for a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The campaign surpassed its goal and raised $160,330.95. All of the items on the wish list were purchased and the employees had fun. PIG, an excellent candidate for the 2004 HAVE Fund-Raising Program Award.
